ISTRIA, PAZIN - Attractive spacious land in the very heart of Istria! Pazin is the administrative seat of the Istrian County and in the 19th century, largely due to its central location on the Peninsula, but also its importance, it earned the title "heart of Istria". The fascinating image of the medieval Pazin fortress - Kaštela, located above a 130-meter deep abyss where the Pazinčica River flows into the Pazin Cave, inspired the famous French writer Jules Verne to set part of the plot of his novel "Mathias Sandorf", published in 1885, precisely in this setting. Pazin Kaštela is today considered the best-preserved medieval fortress in central Istria, and the oldest preserved written evidence of the existence of Kaštela can be found in the confirmation deed of donation of Otto II. dated June 7, 983, in which it bears the name Castrum Pisinum. The city of Pazin today consists of a total of 18 settlements.
